The NAU Police Department Remodel

NAU’s Police Department needed a new home quickly, as their current facility in the old Lumberjack Stadium was slated for demolition soon. JWA prepared a space program and studied various facilities for their appropriateness, potential remodel time and cost to redevelop. An existing classroom building in South Campus’s Emerald City area was selected. JWA designed the remodel and bid the project under an expedited schedule, to meet NAU’s urgent need to get the department relocated.

The space plan unifies departmental operations and is organized to create a safe environment for employees. Each entry has a controlled access system. The public lobby is secured from employee areas and a fenced employee parking area provides direct access to the building. The building interior was gutted and entirely reconstructed in less than three months. Specialized facilities included a training center that can be converted into an emergency operations center, a dispatch/communications center, secure evidence storage, interview room, armory and patrol lockers. Site work included a new secure parking area, completion of Emerald Drive and reconfiguration of the dangerous San Francisco / Pine Knoll intersection.
